Genesis: 1 – Turn The Lights On

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. (Genesis 1:3-5)

Welcome to the start of my Bible reflections on the book of Genesis.

As a heads up, this is not a deeply theological study type thing. There are better folks than me for that stuff. Also I am going roughly chapter by chapter day by day. That won’t always be the case. The chapter distinctions aren’t always that helpful. Now without further ado, what I see from the opening of Genesis.

One of the reasons I am so fascinated with the book of Genesis at the moment and particularly about the creation narrative is just how deep it is. So much in that opening explains so much that follows both in the scripture and in life in general. I made a bid to explore some of it in the God in Creation series last July, but that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Something I have always been intrigued about in Creation is the first thing God does.

Light.

It’s a great principle at the beginning of anything – get light on the situation. Spend an entire season just getting light on the situation and making a clear distinction between that and the dark stuff. So much heartache would be avoided if we just stopped fumbling around in the dark of our own deluded perceptions and got some light on the situation.

Notice as well not just ‘natural’ light like that which comes from the Sun or Moon, but the Light that comes from the mouth of God. The Light that shines in darkness. It’s not about my light or your light, to make progress we must have His light.

That will make any progress truly delightful.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
