I think it’s a great presentation. And it’s true that empathy and ‘outrospective’ thinking are necessary if we are to care for the sick, feed the hungry, visit those in prison and so on. But although they are necessary, they are by no means sufficient.
Jesus had empathy in spades, but he also did what he saw the Father do. As his followers, empathy is not enough. We need to be aware of the Holy Spirit as he takes us into places and situations that he has already prepared for us. Empathy can take us a long way, but it lacks the Jesus factor. Such things as gentleness, joy, peace, love, self-control and kindness find their deepest expression as fruit ripened through the action of the Spirit. We are a sent people, men and women on a mission, not dependent on empathy alone.
Thanks for sharing the empathy video. I wouldn’t have seen it otherwise.
Awesome!
Chris, thanks very much for your insight. I am richly blessed by it in how it puts things into perspective. It certainly isn’t just about empathy. Thanks again!
