One Story: Many Contributors

When it’s a Marvel movie, I’ve now been conditioned to sit through the credits.

I sit through the credits because there are meant to be little teasers and hints as to what might happen in future films.  Sometimes the hints are good, sometimes they leave you thinking what was the point.

Actually, though, there is still a point to sticking around through the trailers.  The sheer range and diversity of posts and roles that are credited is truly astounding.  Those credits have got to last the best part of 5-10 minutes and there must be hundreds of names, possibly thousands that roll up the screen.  Names that you’ve never heard of and often names you can barely read because they are squidged between dozens of others in small text scrolling up the screen at a fair rate.

What should become apparent is that this movie-making business is big business.  A business that involves such a wide range of roles and so many people to look after every element.  Catering, transport, make-up and special effects, sponsors, producers, etc.  All of them contributing to one film. If any individual messes up their role it could affect the entire production.  If you have a bad day it could hold things up.  You do your bit well, though, and it could take the film to the next level possibly by inspiring others to work well too.

I notice all this as the credits roll and I think of the church.  I think of Paul’s plea through the letter to Corinth to stop the squabbling, stop the messing about, stop the carnal, worldly thinking and acknowledge that we have the mind of Christ.  With that mind we need to be aware that we each play a part with the gifts we’ve uniquely been given to contribute to the bigger story. the bigger deal.

Many contributors – prayers, evangelists, cleaners, encouragers, caterers, prison visitors, care home attendants, administrators, counsellors and so many more.  Young, old, black, white, fully-bodied, physically/mentally/emotionally impaired, loud, quiet, intellectual, practical, net-savvy, IT neanderthal. All of them contribute to the one story.

The story of the King and His Kingdom.  A story that is no fairy tale.  A story transforming lives and building communities.  A story affecting every avenue and aspect of life.  An eternal love story. With room for plenty more to come join in and be a contributor.

The King says He’ll have his own credits list and those on it will get to enjoy the bits during and after the roll call.  Happy are those who are part of it. What a true marvel that will be.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
