Following Dad’s Instructions

My Dad was never a very verbal man.

The church used to love the rare opportunities he got to preach because although he wouldn’t be the charismatic big preacher, he would also not take long.

Though he wasn’t the chatty type – my Mum more than made up for that – it was evident he loved his wife and he loved his children. He made every effort to conduct himself appropriately in all settings. He was very diligent in his responsibilities and highlighted the virtues of hard work and discretion with humility and loyalty.

As such he instructed my brother and me on how we should be by example. His actions spoke for him, making his instructions clear for us to understand.

Thank God, my brother is already showing the same traits in his commitment and devotion to his wife and children.

When I read in Proverbs 4 Solomon’s reference to the words of his father and evident high regard, I am reminded of my own Dad.

In the bigger picture, however, I am also reminded of Jesus. Here was the Son who paid careful attention to follow the instructions of His Father. That could be verbal instruction, but it was just as much through action. Jesus said all He did was what He saw His Father.

Like Jesus, we too can focus and reflect what the Father instructs us. We can value those instructions in His will, word and way by doing them. Wisdom only makes sense in action.

Even if the specifics are vague in the immediate, there’s sufficient to be going on with general instructions as we do our best to please him.

Forging a reputation for doing what God instructs is a great way of showing our love for the Father. All the more reason to keep on keeping on.

For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
