Too Busy

Life.

I get it.  Mortgage or rent to be paid.  That means you need a decent paying job that will eat up a lot of the hours in the week.  That doesn’t leave time for much else on a week day.  By the time the weekend comes around, we’re just about able to muster the energy to sort out domestic stuff.  We then need to take a break and recuperate as well as get prepared to go through the cycle all over again.  All of this to keep our head above the water.

I get it.

I get it – and I don’t like it.

I don’t like it because it’s a trap of mediocrity that stops us from exploring and engaging in some of the things that matter in life.  Relationships.  True, deep and joy-filled relationships.  Sure we’ve got the trappings to do that – we have the weddings, christenings, birthday parties and the all that.  We go out on the Friday or Saturday night.  Really, though.  Really. I look at people’s faces and see the same dry look of someone who needs something richer, deeper, more authentic even in its simplicity.

Of course church is different, though isn’t it.

Isn’t it?

Errrrr  … Let me say at least there’s enough in the example of Jesus with His disciples, the life of the early church and the writings of those pioneers in the New Testament church to suggest that we should be different.  Very different.

It’s not to suggest we cannot say we’re busy – indeed there’s enough to keep us occupied.  But we are not too busy for the things that matter – relationships.  An opportunity to share the love of God where and when it matters most.

Help us, Lord.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom

  1. I hear your pain. And you are right.

We need to be living this life for Yashua, and for one another, and for our neighbour, and for our enemy. Fully. Wholeheartedly. All the time.

But we can’t, there’s this huge compromise called work-life balance. It sounds like a see-saw, but I want to know what will happen if the plank breaks.

    1. Oh Chris – what happen when the work-life balancing plank breaks. When it breaks, we all get a break to break out of the rut that keeps us away from what really matters in life.

It is a very real challenge for people in this culture to get a different perspective on how to live that doesn’t kow-tow to the routine and rituals determined by Mammon.

It is a challenge that I grapple with every day. But in the meantime, a toast to the breaking of the plank!
