I saw this picture (Thanks to The Meta Picture) and at first recognised it for it’s humour and then looked closer and considered how real it is. Sure it reflects the American concept of the normal life, but it’s not that different to the British version. In fact quite a number of cultures and sub-cultures could outline a similar strait-jacket of norms that people are to conform to and call themselves free at the same time.
That’s why Romans 12:1, 2 remain crucial verses to me – the standards that the world set and their definition of ‘freedom’ enslaves just as much as any other shocking display of being put in shackles. Only difference really is the subtlety and acceptability of the norm.
Just before you think it’s safe to accept what the culture suggests is a ‘good life’ remember the challenge Jesus brings to those sacred cows and join Him in smashing them up and replacing them with the abundant life centred on Him for the glory of His Father by the power of His Spirit.

I would feel equally as oppressed by dedicating my life to a God that I find to be the cause of so many issues in the World today, than I do when thinking about the oppressive nature of Capitalist democracies. In fact, Capitalist Democracies are simply using tactics that religion has used for centuries. The all powerful hand of a God that no one has ever proven exists, is replaced by the apparently invisible hand of the market. I dislike both of them.
FD,
You seem to miss the difference between religion and faith in God. Men have used all sorts of systems to advance their own causes but the misuse of something by some is not warrant for a blanket condemnation. After all, we know what swell places to live the various non-democratic nations have been. I hear it is lovely weather in the Siberian gulags this time of year.
