His spokesman was upset, but He was not surprised.
Ever since He had taken them out of slavery, they had persistently been faithless to Him. Time after time they would sell themselves out and get defeated by their enemies. Time after time they would cry out to Him for help. Time after time He would rescue them. Time after time they would turn their back on Him despite His clear invitation for them to not just be set free but to enjoy what it is to stay free.
Now here they were putting it to Him that they wanted to be like everyone else. They wanted to have someone to rule over them. They wanted a system just like everyone else. And to get the system like everyone else, they essentially wanted to ditch Him.
His spokesman was upset, but He was not surprised.
Now that they had their own way and could have the system they always wanted, now that they ditched Him, they discovered calamity, confusion, corruption, incompetence. They got themselves mired in that rut and placated themselves with delusions of grandeur that sustained the status quo. They sought to paint a picture of things getting better as long as they had a system of their own.
Those who now speak for Him no longer look to change their mind. They speak as He spoke about one who will rule in justice and righteousness. They speak of one who will rule with real and lasting peace. They endeavour to live under that rule in the here and now under whichever system others choose to promote.
Those who now speak for Him look to one aim and desire,
Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
