The Word in John: 1 – Who Is He?

A while ago a group of us looked at Genesis 1 and considered what things we find out about God in it.

When we finished the study, we were all amazed at how much about who God is and what He does is expressed in that first chapter of the Bible.

The first chapter of the gospel according to John is a similarly amazing exercise when applied to finding out who Jesus is within that first chapter. It’s certainly worth dwelling on all the things said about who He is. Yet a verse that’s always struck me as fascinating about this chapter which is a running theme throughout this account is this one:

I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. (John 1:26)

There were people at the time of John the Baptist who would be expecting the Messiah, but it’s so intriguing to discover that those who expect don’t know Him when he arrives. So many people today are looking for someone to rescue them and govern them in fairness. They may not know Him even though He has arrived.

It reminds me that it’s my responsibility as I get to know Him to make Him known to others, so they too can be on a quest to find out who He is.

For His Name’s Sake

  1. We never fully know him, do we! We can’t, we can always know him more, or better, but not fully in this life. But he utterly and completely knows me, and you. I am learning to listen to him and not only do I find in him more about his nature, but more about my own. He knows me far better than I know myself.

Bless you, Chris. May you know the grace and peace and joy and encouragment of Jesus more abundantly every day, every hour, every minute.

    1. Dear Chris thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words. Indeed we’re on a journey of ever getting to know Him and the more we know Him the more we know ourselves. You are a key in this particular series, your cycling through the gospels got me thinking about going on a similar journey. Cycling isn’t really me, but a stroll is just as good! God bless you, sir, in all you do for Him as you grow in the grace and knowledge of the one who its worth living for.
