Following Jesus takes in quite a lot.
As I was reminded when reading I Am A Follower (the book I’m currently reading by Leonard Sweet), the distinctive is I am following Him, not just His teachings. That’s why it’s good to take time in seeing who it is I am following.
What I notice about Jesus is His attention to prayer and His complete reliance on the Father for instruction and direction. Being Spirit-filled is about being in tune with God’s call in all of life and then obediently carrying out what He receives.
Consciously applying that in every day life I find to be incredibly challenging. I find it so because of the various other issues that beg for my attention in life. These issues are important, but I would do myself the favour of prioritising getting God’s insight before attending to the issues. In fact I am learning, if I look to get God’s insight before, during at the end of every day things tend to go better for me. I have better days.
The writer of Proverbs obviously had an understanding of that in chapter 2 when he stressed the importance of pursuing wisdom, knowledge and understanding from God as if it was the most valuable thing in life. What we treasure, what we value, we’ll invest more into and receive whatever it has to offer. Investing quality time and effort in the value of godly wisdom above all else then shapes everything else in a fruitful manner.
Following Jesus is not meant to be easy, but it’s far more rewarding when we treat wisdom highly.
For His Name’s Sake
