Security in Uncertain Times

Security is something highly valued by people. We are not far from the generation that believed in ‘jobs for life’ and marriages that should last forever. There is comfort in knowing something will always be there to help. So it is not the most encouraging thing to hear that the only sure things in life are death and taxes.

The impact of insecurity and uncertainty are varying in degree from strained relationships to suicide. The need to be safe and secure cannot be underestimated.

Not long ago I informed you of some challenges in the job front. I was speaking to a friend recently who was talking about the redundancies made in his industry. He has been with his company for over 12 years and seen six waves of redundancies that saw a company with at one time 10000 being whittled down to 3000. There is no certainty that despite his good work record he will still be in his job by the end of the year and with his responsibilties and at his age it is not a good time to be made redundant.

So such uncertainties have a real impact on people’s lives and is an issue for which the Christian experience has something insights. In my walk one of the first things realised is that actual material security is never guaranteed but His provision and presence is. That reassurance is fundamental to negotiating the choppy waters in life. It is the hope that fills all of life, for although it is good to know key relations might be there, or you may have made contingencies, uncertainty even strikes this area because friends and family can go missing whilst even the best laid contingency can amount to nothing.

Trust in God is not something to be exercised in emergencies, it is there to be the basic order of life, the first port of life. All life’s plans are meant to be based on such trust. And developing that dependence in experience allows preparation for extreme eventualities. For the greatest thing to have is assurance in uncertain times of the security to be found in the everlasting, ever merciful, ever comforting arms of a loving Father who still offers life in its fulness.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
