Day 5: Passing on the Baton
Read 2 Timothy 2:1-7
Memory verse: 2 Tim 2:1 – You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,
Context: How does Paul pass the baton of ministry?
Establishes the pattern in what he demonstrates and then teaches. From there, he commissions his son to ensure the pattern continues so that others will observe and learn and then pass on. As Paul is careful to commission the trustworthy, so he expects his son to commission the trustworthy.
Content: List the three metaphors (soldier, athlete, farmer) and their key qualities.
The soldier – focused on pleasing the superior officer to the point of not getting wrapped up in non-military matters.
The athlete – focused on the win, competes according to the rules
The farmer – focused on being the first to get a share of the crops due to his diligent work
Key qualities overall – vigilant obedience, narrow focus, strict discipline, observant awareness, consistent diligence, meticulous industry
Concept: Why is “grace” the power source for these roles?
Paul’s commission to Timothy is to continue the work of God to the point of joining in the suffering. For that to happen, all is dependent on the power of God. The aspects required to do God’s work have nothing to do with what we can muster – it is only possible by what God gives. This is why the only source for this to happen is grace.
Conclusions: Which metaphor best matches your current season, and what next step follows?
At this time, close though all the metaphors are to my season, I’d edge it to the soldier. I am very keen to be focused and disciplined in doing only what it takes to please the one who commissions me for this work.
Next Up – 2 Timothy – Day 6: Passing on the Baton
Read 2 Timothy 2:8-13
Memory verse: 2 Tim 2:11-12a
Context: How does remembering Jesus sustain Paul?
Content: Break down the “trustworthy saying” into its four couplets.
Concept: How do these couplets balance warning and comfort?
Conclusions: Where do you need endurance right now?
Whether soldier, athlete or farmer, as long as we have breath and a relationship, we have a role to play in His Kingdom. That’s another reason to get the Word In so we can get the Word Out!
