OTKC 05: Let Your Light Shine

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven”
— Matthew 5:16 (ESV)

When the switch is turned, there’s no doubt about the light that emerges. The issue is about turning the switch on.

In Jesus’ profound Sermon on the Mount, He delivers the above compelling command that resonates deeply with His followers. This directive is not merely a suggestion but a vital part of living out our faith, reflecting the transformative power of Christ in our lives.

The Light We Bear

Jesus begins by declaring, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). This statement is both empowering and humbling. As believers, we are not just recipients of God’s light; we are also its bearers. The light we carry is not our own but a reflection of Christ’s presence within us. It is the light of hope, love, and redemption that shines brightest in the darkest corners of the world.

A City on a Hill

Jesus illustrates this concept by comparing us to a city built on a hill, which cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14). This metaphor emphasises the visibility and impact of our faith. Just as a city on a hill is noticeable from afar, our lives should be a beacon of Christ’s love and light, illuminating the path for others.

The Purpose of Our Light

The purpose of letting our light shine is not to draw attention to ourselves but to glorify God. Jesus instructs us to let our light shine “so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). This aligns with the broader New Testament theme of living for God’s glory. In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul writes, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Our actions, motivated by faith and love, should inspire others to acknowledge God’s goodness.

Practical Steps to Shine

Living out this command requires intentionality and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Here are some practical ways to let your light shine:

  1. Reflect Christ’s Character: As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, His character should increasingly reflect in our actions and attitudes. This includes demonstrating love, kindness, and compassion (Galatians 5:22-23).
  2. Engage in Good Works: Jesus emphasises the importance of good works as a means to let our light shine. This can include volunteering, serving in our communities, or simply being a source of encouragement to those around us (Matthew 5:16).
  3. Share Your Testimony: Our personal stories of transformation and faith are powerful tools to share the light of Christ. Be open to sharing how God has worked in your life with others (1 Peter 3:15).
  4. Pray for Opportunities: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into situations where you can shine His light. Prayer aligns our hearts with God’s purposes and opens our eyes to opportunities we might otherwise miss (Ephesians 6:18).
  5. Depend on the Holy Spirit: Recognize that shining your light is not about your own strength but about allowing the Holy Spirit to work through you. Depend on His power to guide and empower you (Galatians 5:25).

Turn That Switch On

Jesus’ command to let your light shine is not just a call to action; it is an invitation to participate in His mission to illuminate the world with His love and truth. As we reflect on this command, remember that our light is not our own but a reflection of Christ’s presence in us. Lets shine brightly, inspiring others to seek the source of our light—our Father in heaven. Let’s turn it on.
