Paul & Sons: 02 – Introducing Paul and Timothy

We are introduced to the relationship in Acts 16. In Lystra, Paul wanted Timothy to be with him on his travels. Here was this young man – known in the Christian community. He had a good reputation in the region and he was content to be circumcised for the sake of the Jews in that area.

Timothy was about to be exposed to a variety of thrilling, dangerous and insightful episodes in the journeys of Paul and his apostolic team. Timothy was not just an observer, he was an active participant in the activities and learnt what to do on the job as he observed Paul and his colleagues in action. For all that he witnessed and experienced, however, Paul still saw it necessary to instruct Timothy on what to do in Ephesus while he was unable to attend to them due to him being locked up.

The letters that we read from Paul to Timothy have a fatherly affection in places. They are, however, very clear in the mission of Timothy setting the church properly in its spiritual infrastructure so that it would be well-founded in the sound doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As they were on mission, so Timothy is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that this is carried out in the community of grace.

The letters express Paul’s heart for the believers, appreciating the culture of the time and also seeing why that culture should be shaped by leaders who exemplify the standards expected by the brethren. This is also why there’s just as much of an emphasis for Timothy to express that character likewise. Timothy has the reference point of the relationship with Paul and the various exploits they have had for the sake of the gospel.

Reading the letters is instructive and informative for us as readers. It’s fascinating to see what it says about where we are in our growth in Christ. Challenges us to see if we’re committed to growth alongside those given by God to support us in that growth. Challenges us to see if we’re aware of the standards God has for His church in its actions, behaviour and character. Challenges us to see if we appreciate those who are placed in positions of responsibility to support the functioning and development of the Body of Christ. In terms of our own development are we at the place where we should still be learning the basics of life in Christ? Are we desiring to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus to be in the place of serving others in supporting their development?

These are the kinds of questions we can consider as well as have that appreciation for the life of Christ in His Bride the church as we engage on mission with him reading through Paul’s letter to Timothy.
