Football is a sport I enjoy watching a lot.
One of the components of the game that I find interesting is the role of leadership in the team. It’s not about whether you’re referred to as the captain or not, it’s about how your role affects others in the team. As a result, there are a number of outstanding leaders in teams who motivate by their tactical instruction or inspired by example. It’s one thing to have a system or be an outstanding individual, but the leaders in the team not only look after their own game but raise the performances of others.
The church is not football, but there are similarities when it comes to leadership. It is not down to folks with positions or titles, it really is a matter of whether they can motivate by scriptural instruction and inspire by godly example. It is a pity that people can be swayed by charismatic qualities when it comes to leadership – are they able to speak well? Do they look good? Can they draw and keep a crowd entertained and intrigued by their rhetoric? Despite the wealth of wisdom offered in scripture about leadership in so many examples, we still need to learn from these time and time again.
The big deal to learn is that godly leadership encourages those who follow to keep Jesus as the focus in their example and direction. So it’s good to read that in the qualities explored in this piece about seven core characteristics of church leaders. I hope that as you read this you will see the value that good leaders have not in terms of their speaking and great visions and having “the look”. I hope we are brought back to Jesus and see why it’s important to see how we should be led to be like Him so that our example can likewise lead others to Him.
