How do you follow Jesus?
I wish I asked that question a lot more intentionally when I started the journey. As it was, I was brought up in a church environment and so I assumed a lot and a lot was assumed of me. Assumptions can really make a … silly situation for all parties concerned. One particular area in which assumptions did not help was when it came to developing that right relationship with Jesus through fasting and prayer.
If I could encourage anyone getting into following Jesus, I would encourage them to get to know about the vital role fasting and prayer have. Prayer is not something to be assumed at all. Fasting is an area that should definitely be explored to see how that supports the relationship.
Where that’s concerned, in as much as there is a lot of good material available to help, I’m glad I came across this article by Valerie Woerner on a beginner’s guide to fasting. I’m glad I came across it for it offers to support people not just at the beginning but to appreciate it wherever you are when it comes to the matter.
Some people want a fast track as if it will get them to a destination quicker and without hassle. The fast track that Jesus has in mind is not about speed or ease, but it can be about a closer relationship that makes all the difference.
It’s certainly helpful when working out how to follow Jesus.
