Purge and Purify

Sometimes episodes in life take place and reveal much about ourselves and those around us.

At the time we can question why those things happen. We can be upset at what they cause in terms of heartache, disappointment and pain. Yet as we wipe away the tears we can be given an insight into matters that would not have emerged had those episodes not happened. We can see the mess that we’re in. We can become aware of how some deep-rooted attitudes and habits are actually causing damage and not actually helping us cope at all. We can take into account in stark clarity how certain systems and practices that might have been helpful in a previous setting are totally unsuitable in the current setting. We can appreciate how certain relationships that were beneficial in one season has come to a natural end and persisting in them is unhealthy. This takes place, not in the dingy dark corner of bitterness, but in the warm and reassuring presence of the Light.

It’s clearly necessary for us because in pursuit of holiness there are stages of purging and purifying.

These episodes help in showing how we need to be purged of those unhelpful habits, attitudes and relationships. as long as they abound, they clog up the system. They don’t help the pursuit of holiness, they hinder it, however subtly. These episodes come along and bring into view those things that we should be purged of and we get to see how they are a real blockage to what we should be aiming for. It’s another sense in which we are being shown what’s required to be in the best form and shape possible to be fruitful and productive in the current season.

These episodes help in showing how we need to be purified by that which renews and refocuses our attention on the Lord Jesus Christ. No longer prayer for what it was in the past. No longer satisfying with relying on yesterday’s mercies, but taking this refreshing perspective of the primacy of intimacy with the Saviour. Purified in the worship of the Lamb on the throne and allow that worship to shape our thinking and resulting actions. Purified by fellowship with those who long for and value that primacy of intimacy with the Saviour. Purified by the hunger and desire to live once more by every word that comes from the Father. Purified by a new zest to pursue the Kingdom of God and His righteousness only.

The pain of such episodes is real. The realisation of your own failing, as well as the failing of others, can be deeply wounding. These are not there for us to remain in an introspective mode and further retreat into ourselves. These are there for us to see Jesus again, see Him for the one who will correct those who go astray. See Him as one who directs and guides by His Spirit to be purged and purified for His service. That way the scars that would previously cause a wince in memory of agony, can be testimonies of the grace and mercies of God in taking us through the necessary process of purging and purifying.

It is not about our comfort, it is not about everything revolving around us as though we’re the centre of the universe. It is about what happens in life to reveal things as they need to be revealed so we can repent, be reconciled and restore to shine brightly for the glory and honour and praise of our wonderful God.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
