It was not the plan to be popular and fit in with the in-crowd.
It was a by-product of doing good that attracted crowds and admirers. Many of those in the crowd were delighted with the good works and remarkable signs on display. They were happy to follow for those things.
When they were invited to taste more of this way of life by active belief in the man who was bringing about these good works and remarkable signs, that’s where the interest began to taper off. When what was involved in active belief in this man was outlined, the interest continue to wane.
As long as the good works and remarkable signs were in operation, it went well. When it came to matters of allegiance and embracing the message …
… Yet there were those who would follow. They would not necessarily understand everything that was said. They would question things from time to time. There was something about the man, though, His authority derived from a source beyond what they were used to. His character could not be doubted. His walk matched His talk to a degree they had not encountered previously which made the claims He made about Himself however incredulous, somehow credible.
It’s worth reminding ourselves of this as we progress on the journey. One that involves good works and remarkable signs. One that might gain a crowd, but the real deal is about those who are committed to following the Lord Jesus as He leads in the journey.
