A Prayer of Thanks: For Work

Dear Heavenly Father:

When you set this whole world up, in your wisdom you put humanity on here and commissioned humanity to work it. Bring out the best in it. Cultivate it to ensure that which was designed to be fruitful could be more fruitful.

Work remains a blessing from you.

I’m grateful that in your Son, you keep that theme of work going and He was focused on being about your business. Thank you for that single-minded attention to serving the needs of those put in His sphere of influence. Thank you for that example of the value of working that brings value and meaning to the lives of those who benefit from what is offered.

I know there was a time when my life was so attached to a paid employment via being an employee that the loss of it for a while felt like massively depressing. Thank you for the opportunity to appreciate the value of work, but also gain a perspective that work is defined primarily in you, for you and through you rather than looking for identity and worth in paid employment.

I am grateful for work. The work of supporting family life. The work of supporting community life. The work of supporting what it is to serve others with the gifts, talents and abilities you gave me. I am grateful for the current work that provides a significant income stream. I am also grateful for your wisdom available to acknowledge that I should not be enslaved to one source of income (or an employee) for everything. Just as I am grateful for the wisdom you offer in growing in knowing how to make the most of what is produced when we work to invest into your Kingdom and the lives of those who need to experience your goodness.

From time to time, I often feel like I’m starting all over again in learning your wise guide in terms of work appreciating its purpose and learning what to do with the fruit of it. Thank you for your patience in teaching me until I get what you’re saying and apply it to make the most of the work-life you call me towards. It’s a pleasure to dedicate all of my working life to you, to do the best of all that you invest in me for your glory.

Thank you, Father.
