A Moses Profile: 14 – Time Away To Listen

Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

Exodus 24:15-18

He was initially gone for a day. Then it was a week. Then it was a few weeks. Then it transpired that he was gone for 40 days.

What was he doing in all that time?

He spent quality time in the presence of God taking on some instructions for God’s house and God’s ministers. That which would mark the people as being distinct for His purpose was outlined in that time. Moses had the honour of getting insight on that which mattered to God.

Do we need an invitation? Have we received an invitation that we overlooked because we’re so busy? Do we think that it’s for other people to have that time with God and let us know later? Does it even matter to us what matters to God to the extent that we would desire to spend time just listening?
