A Peter Profile: 04 – The Man Who Wept Bitterly

Jesus, I will never deny you. These others might, but I won’t. You can count on me.

I have been with you through so much. I was the one who believed who you were and was happy to declare your identity when others kept quiet. I took the steps on water to you, when you walked on the water.

These others can turn their backs on you, but I will never deny you. You can count on me.

I saw your true form on that mountain. I saw you talking to the great patriarchs of old. I witnessed it. I beheld your glory and heard the voice of your Father acclaim you. I have seen it.

All the others can run from you, but I will never deny you. You can count on me.

You remember when a lot of them left you because of what you said about the flesh and your blood. You remember how many walked away from you because it was too hard for them. You remember I told you where else can we go, you have the words of life.

Those others can walk away from you, but I will never deny you. You can count on me.

I will never deny you. I will never deny you. I. Will. Never. Deny. You.

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. (Luke 22)
