Why Would You Look For Him Here?

He had told them what would happen.

He told them that He would go to Jerusalem. He told them that He would be betrayed. He told them that He would be taken and crucified. He told them that after three days, He would rise from the dead.

He outlined that to them. Not just once. It was as though it was important for them to keep that in mind.

Yet when it happened, they were somewhat perplexed and bemused. They turned up at the tomb expecting to look after a dead body.

Angels were there and asked them a most pertinent question:

“Why are you looking for the living among the dead?”

That was not the only thing He had said on the matter either. For earlier, in an encounter with a dearly loved friend, He used the opportunity to utter something else true about His identity and purpose. That dear friend had died and his sisters had thought if He was on the scene the death wouldn’t have happened. Yet He had said that He is the Resurrection and the Life and those who believed in Him would never die. This was something that the sisters had not really picked up on until their brother was restored from the dead having been buried for four days. Yet this was a sign – an indication as to who He was and what He had to offer to those who believed in Him.

Even as those who searched for him among the dead were reminded of His Word, so He reminds believers today that those who trust in Him can trust His Word about their destiny.

There’s no need to go looking for the living among the dead.
