It is fragile.
The ego that is. It is very fragile.
The self loves to feel satiated and highly valued. When that is not the case, the pursuit is on to make sure that it happens. Power plays happen, persuasive efforts come to the fore and it doesn’t take much to see that the basis of this is to do something for the self because of that fragility of the ego.
To leave this place of insecurity is in itself a very tricky endeavour. To do so requires the acknowledgement that there is something of greater value and importance than the ego. Something has to happen that will make the giving up of self an understandable and desirable effort. Something or Someone has to emerge as being of far greater importance that to hand over everything to that Something or Someone can justify seeing the self as a lower priority.
The invitation of Jesus is to come to Him, learn of Him and find rest. Find rest in Him because He is able to carry your burdens, He is able to carry them and to also protect you, even as He too was able to give up Himself for the sake of the call on His life. He dows this to show the way of denying self to take up the cross and follow this way that is more valuable than the self.
So from catering to the insecurities of the self, there is safety in giving that up to live by the power of a life far greater. This is how Jesus allows us to leave that place of insecurity.
