Wisdom and Making Progress

Some say it’s important to always move forward and there’s no such thing as standing still because remaining in your position in real terms is regressing.

There is an issue for some, however, who are very content doing what they’re doing. They have come across a rhythm and routine to life that they are very comfortable with. It works for them. Change is a frightening thought when considering the nature of upheaval it will cause to their whole way of life.

Yet wisdom continues to point out that if growth requires leaving what is comfortable and routine, then there is an element to making progress that will require doing things that have never been done before.

Imagine being brought up to be a fisherman and accepting that as your way of life. It’s all you know and all you’ve been accustomed to. Now imagine this guy comes along and invites you to quit all that, leave that behind and follow him. Imagine the upheaval.

Imagine being involved in a fairly well paid accounting job and accepting that as your way of life. There’s some grief, but it’s all part of the job and all you’ve been accustomed to. Now imagine this guy comes along and invites you to quit all that, leave that behind and follow him. Imagine the upheaval.

Yet these followers of Jesus and others did exactly that because wisdom told them that if they were going to make progress in their lives, if they were to see something greater than what they had experienced, then it would require doing something they had never done before.

The journey of faith is not a journey of comfort. It’s not a journey to developing a relaxed and reliable routine. It is a journey of growth. It’s a journey to God, by God, with the help of God that necessarily calls for change.
