You Got It? Good. We’re Gonna Do It Again

When are we going to get to the good stuff?

You know. All of the neat tricks and sweet technique that they use? When are we going to get to do that?

All we ever seem to do are the basics. Again and again. We’ve got it already. When can we get on to the good stuff?

For weeks I kept on nagging him about it. For weeks he just smiled and told us to do the basics. Eventually I got tired of asking him.

In fact I was thinking about quitting it altogether until the incident happened.

It happened and people around me were stressing out and flustered about what to do. At that moment, though, what kicked in for me was the reminder of the basics. It kicked in like muscle memory. Like it was programmed into my system to do it, just as we had done it for those months. Just the basics. No need for anything fancy or complex. Just the basics.

By the time I finished, someone next to me was so amazed by what happened and I responded they wondered how I was able to do it. I didn’t take any credit for it. I told them about how my life had been changed by the encounter and ever since then I was instructed to just do the basics, time and again. Over and over.

When I reflected on that, I got back to learning again even though it was going through the basics. Not only that, but I would do it with renewed passion and commitment. It may well be the basics, but learning about it time and again is so crucial, it can help out when others fall apart.

Even when I think I’ve got a hold on it, it’s just good to never take it for granted. It’s time to do the basics again.
