Just Win

Do you really think it bothers fans of a sporting side when others criticise them if they win a major trophy but don’t look glamorous about it?

Do you really think fans of a successful sports personality agonise about how that individual accumulated all their accolades but didn’t look pretty doing it?

Really?

I’m sure there is merit to winning something with grace and beauty, class and technique to admire and cherish. Many a sports journalist will wax lyrical about those sorts of winners.

Yet the whole point of competing should be about winning. If you accomplish that then there’s enough reason to celebrate. Indeed poetic, beautiful and technically gifted people who miss out on winning might have their fans, but they’ve still missed out on the core point of competing. They can attract their admirers for their commitment to style and breaking ground in new ways of things. What’s the whole point of that if you don’t win? Does that really replace that fundamental essence of winning?

It’s a quality I admire in a lot of winners – that they win. Of course I mean win properly – I don’t mean cheat, I mean win. I admire those who keep focused and not get bogged down wth the opinions of others. They just crack on with what’s most important.

They just win.

Consider too, that this is not just a principle about sport.
