There can be something rather proud and obnoxious about the head held high.
It can in some settings give the impression of superiority.
Yet there are times in life, especially when the storms are raging in particular where the head held high is not just about defiance, it’s about looking up in hope. It’s about recognising that you can see where you’re going when your head is up. You know you’ve not been downtrodden when your head is up. In fact you can even see where your help is coming from in the storm when you hold your head up high.
So many keep their heads down because they’ve been battered. Physically, emotionally, spiritually. Just battered. One thing after another and it gets wearing and upsetting and sometimes it just feels like the best thing to do is to keep your head down. Down and out. You get used to the feeling too. Maybe this is how it was always meant to be. Maybe this is just how you were supposed to be. Down and out.
It is only when you come across a living hope that you can hold your head up high and keep it there. Not out of delusion. Not out of desperation. Out of an assurance that there is something to look forward to – something that can carry you through the storm. Something that can even quell the storm and indicate that the brighter days ahead will be far greater than the stormy ones you face today.
It is this hope that gives you a reason to hold your head up high.
