You’re Better Off Believing?

Basing life purely off what your senses pick up must be quite draining.

Really and truly we don’t just base life off that. There are some things that support that. There are some ideas that underpin our views, even if they’re mixed and somewhat confused if you were to consider them carefully.

There might be an aspect of those views that aspire to something better, something greater. Sure some may just have a downtrodden version of life that just accepts what is as the case. There is something energising and encouraging, however, about considering a life that has something to look forward to, something that makes life joyful.

This is a reason why I think faith has its appeal. Even to those who might be baffled by people devoting their whole life to something that does not always appear to work out. The degree to which that devotion gives evidence of joy or serenity in that life must be a quality that is jarring with the alternative of a ‘realistic’ perspective that disregards notions of faith in the unseen.

Building life on reason, makes a massive assumption about reason. It in fact calls to some degree for faith in reason as if reason in an of itself is something as close to infallible, reliable and comprehensive in itself. That really is a significant step to take if you scratch beyond the surface of that assumption.

Either way, the purposeful and potentially joyful existence has such a degree of faith that to some extent you might end up thinking you’re better off believing.

If you reach that conclusion, the next thing to consider is what is worth believing in. That opens up a wonderful, exciting, perplexing and thrilling adventure, which I think is worth the journey.
