Be A Good HOST – Conclusion?

There is a derisory phrase used by some to comment on someone drastically changing their mind on a matter. The term is that such a person has had a ‘come to Jesus’ moment.

It’s interesting that this practice is used for satirical or cynical reasons. It’s interesting because the invitation to come to Jesus is actually the best invitation to be given. It does require a drastic change of direction and perspective and focus.

Coming to Jesus is an opportunity to be served by the King of Glory and has been mentioned recently, coming to Jesus is coming to the best host. He knows how to welcome you, how to put you in the best place and then how to ensure you get what you need to richly enjoy your time with Him. He knows this not just by what He has to offer in terms of resources, but by what He gives you in His character.

The remarkable aspect of coming to Jesus the greatest Host is that as you enjoy your time with Him, you recognise that He is also enabling and equipping you too to be a good host. A host for Him so that He can feel free to reside with you and in you by His Spirit. As well as that you become a great host for others to feel welcome to come to you. In a real way people can experience that great invitation to come to Jesus by your conduct as a great host welcoming people into your life and sharing with them the life that resides in you.

The reason for the question mark when looking at the conclusion on the matter o what makes a good HOST is that this is not something that is neatly concluded. It’s something that is set to go on and on.

Humility goes on, obeying goes on, submitting goes on and trusting goes on. It’s counter-cultural in so many ways, but it is enriching and endearing in far greater ways. We don’t rest on any laurels as though we’ve achieved anything. Our eyes remain fixed on the Example of being a great HOST and we see how much more we can become like Him.

There is no conclusion to the matter – there are just more openings to really come to Jesus not as a cynical joke, but as a totally transforming, life-giving experience.
