Be A Good HOST – Trust

Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last. (Luke 23:46 NLT)

Trusting someone is one of the hardest things in life. It’s something that is done consciously and unconsciously at various levels. Knowing what you’re doing when it comes to trust, speaks volumes of what is valued. Whatever we place our trust in is something we suggest is worthy and able to retain and safeguard what we value in life.

That’s why some put their trust in money and others put their trust in key personal relationships. They put their trust in them in the belief that these will sustain them, uphold them and keep them. Trust is placed in medicine and psychological and motivational techniques.

At the toughest times of His earthly ministry, Jesus knew where He could place His trust. Even at the point where those who had been with Him the closest over the years would leave Him, He knew, what mattered.

But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. (John 16:32 NLT)

The source of submission, the reason for obedience and the foundation of humility is the trust we can place in the Father who won’t leave us. Even in His darkest hour, our Example could commit Himself into the hands of His Father. Now we on our journey have the assurance that our Example won’t leave us or let us down. Even as the Example trusted, so we have an example of who to trust in and to the extent that we can trust.

During His time on the earth, Jesus knew He couldn’t even trust those who paid compliments to Him and wanted His attention. He could only trust the source of His life and the purpose for which He came. That gives us the key insight into where our trust starts from. It’s how the relationship operates at its best. The submission is to a good loving Father. The obedience is to a good, loving Father. The humility is in the light of the good, loving Father.

That’s a trustworthy saying. Who we trust in is totally trustworthy on the ultimate level. Trustworthy in restoring and redeeming. Trustworthy in sustaining and persevering. Trustworthy in mercy and grace. Trustworthy in protecting and providing. Trustworthy to the ultimate.

That degree of character is also evident from us to others. They don’t only detect the character from us, they detect that it must come from something far greater than us. From the One we can trust.
