When It’s A Good Story

There is power in a good story.

You can suggest that there is a subjective element to a good story. I’m sure you’d be fine with that suggestion. Allow me to get all subjective in this here blog – you can see if you like the subject.

A good story makes a strong connection to reality.  With that connection it opens up issues and asks questions. It might lean towards answers to those questions and those leanings may be apparent in the telling of the story. There is something about it, however that evokes the need to ask those questions.

A good story presents key characters that etch themselves on the psyche. Those characters challenge you to look at those around you and finally yourself. Those characters make decisions that you root for or find completely bizarre. Those decisions move the story forward and takes us on the character’s arc and at times we are left wondering if we would make those decisions.

A good story contains elements of humour and pathos.

A good story reflect the realities of life that there is good and bad in the world. Much as we would prefer there to just be good and things to work out right, that will not always be the case. The good story recognises that and either leaves that reality hanging there to ponder on soberly, or proffers a leaf of hope to hang onto.

Some people want to be entertained – and that’s fair enough. I like to take in a good story.
