It Should Be Fun Too

Man alive, people can get really serious at times.

Considering the beauty of creation, it doesn’t give me the impression that things are supposed to be all that serious.

Wonder, amazement, joy and delight as part of life should not be rare. Tough things happen, sure. Responsibilities, of course, shouldn’t be taken glibly. There is also the very real element in which people use entertainment to medicate them from what’s going on in life. All those truths can be upheld.

Yet, look at those words – wonder, amazement, joy and delight. My children, especially in their pre-teens, captured it so well. That sense of awe at the new and unknown. That sheer thrill at coming across something they take on board that they have never come across before. No sense of dismissing it with cynicism or scepticism. No desire to look cool and sophisticated by not reacting too much emotionally to things. All of that nuance rubbish is absent. They are there to just take it on and for those few moments behold it as though it was the most amazing thing in life.

The giggling, the laughter, the big in-take of breath at points – all of that is brilliant and does remind us that for all of those serious truths to take on, there is a reason why children would feel comfortable in Jesus’ company. They felt that comfort because something about this man from Nazareth gave them the impression He knew what life was about.

In some matters of life it is about fun after all.
