My Mum made ace shepherd’s pie.
A large baking tray would come out of the oven layered with a smouldering mass of the stuff. I would look at it and my eyes would widen at the sight. Mouth salivating at the thought of consuming it all. Of course what I forgot was that this was my Mum catering for the five of us in the household. Sadly for my massive appetite that tray would not be making its way to my stomach. When it was shared out on the various plates I could just about understand the reasoning behind not getting the whole thing. There was a lot. Of course we wiped it all off, but it was a joint effort. I couldn’t have it all in one go.
It was good shepherd’s pie. That’s for sure.
One of the many reasons for loving the word of God is how it outlines the reality that folks don’t get it all in one go. Abraham’s story, for example, is not of a bloke getting it all the first time. He heard God once and then needed to hear again and then later on heard again and then still later on had to hear again. He got it, but he definitely didn’t get it all in one go.
We don’t get it all in one go and while we don’t get all of it we can muddle around with the bits we don’t get. We can even wonder off from the delight in getting it all. He remains patient, though. Ever presenting the baking tray and pointing out that if we stick to the process, then there will come a day where we get it. Not just some of it – all of it.
Appreciating that reality helps me with the issue of patience. I don’t get it and need folks to wait on me to get it. Likewise others don’t get it and that’s got to be fine with me to wait on them. If they are patient in the process they can get it. If we are patient with the process we’ll get it. We won’t get it because we’re smart or have rugged determination. His grace makes it a delight for us to get it.
When we get it, I have no doubt it will be even better than my Mum’s shepherd’s pie.
