Hear the Life in the Music

You ever hear a piece of music and get a taste of life?

My daughters and I were listening to a piece of classical music and sharing what we heard in it. The thins we shared were about what life is like – happy moments remembering the good things that have happened. Within that there was also a real tinge of melancholy as if something was reaching its end and being put to rest.

The conversation left me mulling over it for ages. I have the honour of being their father and they are growing girls exploring life for themselves. It doesn’t feel all that long ago when I was in their position listening to my parents share about what life was about. Now they’re at a stage where I get to thinking whether it’s worth thinking about the rest that awaits. Thinking about that makes me also think about how my daughters will also look to the rest that awaits me.

In all of that, there’s no guarantee that it will go in the order that we assume. It could be one of my daughters that goes first. One of my parents could indeed go first. I might be the first to go. It’s a sobering thought that also left me thinking about how important it is to hear life in the music. Hear life in the music and remember how we should appreciate it for all its worth while we still have it.
