A Simple Understanding

The father looked at his son and smiled warmly.

“You are not happy are you, son?”

“No Dad,” came the sullen reply.

“Your face is showing something that I can see, but it reveals something that I cannot see. Do you see that, son?”

“Yes Dad,” mumbled the boy.

“You get things from your Mum and me, we give you things, but knowing we love you is about something you cannot see. Do you see that, son?”

“Yes Dad,” now the lad was giving a quizzical look at the line of questions.

“It’s like a lot of the things you can see find their source in what you cannot see. Do you see that, son?”

“… Yes Dad.”

“You understand more than you know, son. You understand more than you know.”
