… As A Simple Cup of Coffee

It’s not always difficult to please her. It can be a simple thing.

Make sure there’s sufficient water in the kettle. Switch the kettle on to begin the boiling process. Take the cup out of the cupboard. Get the coffee tin. Get the teaspoon. Get a teaspoon full of coffee. Put it in the cup. Put the coffee tin away. Get the sugar tin. Get a teaspoon full of sugar. Put it in the cup. Get another teaspoon full of sugar. Put it in the cup. Put the sugar tin away. Get the bottle of milk from the fridge. Wait for the kettle to finish boiling. Carefully pour out the hot water into the cup until it reaches about three-quarters full. Stir the cup whilst moderately adding the milk for about two or three seconds.

Carefully get that cup of coffee to her and see how she reacts when she tastes it. You are safe as long as her face doesn’t crease up as though it is in excruciating discomfort. If that does turn out to be the case, wait to receive instructions as to how to remedy the discomfort.

It is not that difficult or time-consuming once you get into the rhythm of it. Learn the basics and do them as required and it is the easiest way to let there be peace in the home. Nothing too complex at all. Follow the process and you’ll be just fine.

Some go to elaborate degrees to be pleasing to others. Massive structures, immense infrastructure, dense strategies, high level systems requiring heavily detailed procedures that reinforce policies that are documented in hundreds of pages. Maybe if we keep going all night long. Perhaps if we put ourselves out for weeks at a time. What if it took years to develop and arrange at massive expense.

Is it really necessary?

Some of the gatherings involved prayer, a brief time dedicating life to the Master’s teachings, a shared meal and tie to get on with each other. Nothing hugely complex. Something comparatively very simple.

That’s not to say the simple isn’t costly – it definitely is costly. It’s not dismissing the complex as if it has no value – history has highlighted episodes where rich projects that took years in the making met with His delight and approval..

There is something in discovering rhythms that are simple and simply beautiful in how they honour and please the One who calls us to be with Him just as we are without complex structures that could hinder. He simply wants to relate and engage with us.

Even over a simple cup of coffee.
