About Exploring New Opportunities

There is nothing new under the sun.

That is a great relief for me as a writer who endeavours to be creative. It’s a relief because in as much as I want to write something fresh and creative, I don’t have to worry about it being ‘new’ as such. I know what we want from something original, but knowing there’s nothing new, means that at best all we’re coming across is creatively repackaged nuggets of old. Some of those might gold nuggets to be valued highly or some might be chicken nuggets to be consumed and forgotten quickly.

What I like about writing and speaking, though, is the opportunities that are presented to do so. It’s one thing to write on an occasional basis, it’s another thing to be given a platform to write on a more consistent basis. I still remember the first time I came across blogging. My friend from university had done a travel-blog. I read it with great interest and pondered how something like that could possibly happen. A couple of conversations later and I was introduced to the first platform I saw for blogging.

I have never claimed to be a highly computer literate kinda guy, so I was really grateful for the manner in which blogs could be created, published and shared. As a result a very useful platform for the writing I loved was presented. I am not a master marketer and haven’t really tapped into those opportunities (yet), but it’s still quite a buzz to know that what’s been written in a room in Stoke-on-Trent has been read by someone in India or Canada or New Zealand. Also encouraging to know that quite a number of people are still content to receive this in their inbox.

That is to say when someone put a new opportunity my way to make the most of the gifts I know have been given to me, a brief exploration saw the method in which that opportunity could be maximised. That’s quite something for me, because it’s not every time I do that.

It is however something that I want to be more considerate and sensitive to where future opportunities are concerned. Not just for writing either …
