Why Was It Written?

Ahhh come on man, it’s my favourite question to ask.

Why?

There could be a reason, there might be a purpose and maybe in getting to know that it will further enlighten our time of receiving what is being given.

Where’s this coming from? I was just thinking about Luke’s prologue in his gospel account,

Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us. They used the eyewitness reports circulating among us from the early disciples. Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write an accurate account for you, most honorable Theophilus, so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught. (Luke 1:1-4)

The context, the method, the diligence and the purpose all captured in that prologue.

Luke is not messing around. He’s not writing off the top of his head. He is not doing this to pass the time. He has a connection with the risen Saviour and so does Theophilus. Now at this time, Luke can help Theophilus greatly. He has done the research, he has spoken to the eyewitness, he has collected the information. Now he is in the place to be able put it in a form that will ensure that the reader will be reassured that what was shared is true.

We can consider various other themes and agendas that are evident in this gospel account. Yet Luke makes it clear what he’s looking to do. He makes it abundantly clear why he is writing. He’s writing it so Theophilus knows it’s the truth.

This should have an impact on me as a reader today. First of all the privilege of receiving some else’s mail. Secondly a narrative thoroughly researched. Thirdly an account that will ensure that the truth will out.

It sets me up well for what I’m about to read … and it’s just as well because what I’m about to read might raise a few eyebrows, Let’s have another look at Luke.
