There is a flow with the teaching. Get this flow.
When we know who the blessed are, we realise that righteousness is a matter of the heart. As that is the case our spiritual practices are expressions of our commitment to God alone – not for public approval. These in themselves mark out clearly that for the follower of Jesus, to live in the light of the Kingdom of Heaven is to pledge allegiance to God as lord – not money.
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (Matthew 6:30)
That particular nudge to treasure things in heaven as evidenced by serving God and not money is put to practise immediately when Jesus challenges us about the things that people get anxious about. The basic necessities – food and clothing. It’s why people work so hard to get the money that makes the world go around. Failure to get that means failure to get the basics and leads to great anxiety. As if worry is going to make any difference to the situation. Yet that anxiety reveals the trust issue – it reveals the matter of the heart.
When we place our treasures in heaven we see things for how they really are. That it is the loving Father of heaven and earth who provides. Treasuring that truth leads us to pursue what makes for what is pleasing to God. Far better to invest energy towards that and outward, than to focus on earthly things, get hung up as though we can even change our biological structure through worry.
This trust issue, though, is a treasure issue.
