My friend and I enjoy talking about the Playmaker.
The game goes well when things are organised and each part is playing as they should. Sometimes there are parts that are struggling, but the organiser – the Playmaker knows just how to motivate and support the part. Though different games are played, with different opponents and different tactics, the team have applied themselves well to their system and can adapt to changing circumstances because of the Playmaker at the centre of it all.
It certainly doesn’t always appear like it, but for followers of Jesus, He is the Playmaker. He organises and sends. He consoles and encourages. Even as circumstances change and the team face various challenges, those connected to Him are reassured and go again. Followers of Jesus recognise He has placed in a team to work together in harmony. Where one is weak there may be one who is specifically deployed to assist, complement and build up.
It is not always obvious, but as we look to Him, so He makes the way clearer. It feels like muddling through sometimes, but in it all He looks and His presence is palpable through His indwelling Spirit.
We can still make it in declaring and demonstrating the rule of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. We can do it as we grow in recognising how we are organised at the heart of it all.
