Relationships are so crucial to developing as a human being.
One of the aspects of those relationships is when people get together and work together on a project. The interactions and engagements that present the different aspects of people’s personalities and characters is so fascinating. That is evident when we get around to share life together and see it in the light of the word of God.
There was one time I prepared an activity and it was for a group of people I thought I knew fairly well. As a result I went to great degrees to ensure that the groups had relatively unfamiliar dynamics – such as the more shy types leading the teams and the teams consisting of a decent mix of talkers and not those that like to leave it to the talkers.
Yet no matter how well I thought I had set up the activity – the groups continued to intrigue me with the nature of their interactions. We were studying portions of scripture together and the findings the teams came up with, including application for us today, stirred up some eyebrow raising comments. Some who I didn’t think would make a contribution made significant and profound ones. Those who I thought would dominate the teams with their assertive verbal style took a step back to allow others to shine. It was refreshing and it was intriguing to hear the contributions.
Reflecting on the experience later with a friend, it was good to see what can happen when it’s not about how we dictate and shape things, but about what happens when we let certain dynamics live with the just the basic guidelines. There’s no guarantee that it will always work – and subsequent experiences definitely showed that. For all that, there is still something about the group dynamic that can be truly edifying when they pop up with the unexpected.
It’s what makes it all the more beautiful to pursue relationships.
