Measuring Success

Just some questions buzzing round my head.

  • Is it right as a follower of Jesus to consider the concept of ‘success’?
  • If so, what is the disciple’s definition of success?
  • How can it be measured?
  • Is it fair for it to be measured as other non-Christian projects are measured?
  • Is it possible that we may have confused methods of measuring success and as a result pursuing the wrong things with the best intentions?
  • Is success another way of saying fruit?

Just some questions buzzing round my head.

They are there because as the calendar year reaches its conclusion there’s that issue of reviewing how things have gone. Some may have had goals, some would reflect on other aspects of life they were hoping to do well in.

I get the impression sometimes some of us don’t take reflecting and reviewing seriously because they just want to keep going, or they just keep going. Others, I suspect, become over-analytical and before you know it get more caught in the minutiae than the bigger issues at stake.

It’s one extreme to the other and in it all those questions buzzing around in my head. Answers to these questions have been proposed before. Some of them have been very helpful. Some have only made matters more complex. Some have been truly baffling.

I am, however, grateful that in following Jesus, He has not left us completely in the dark in how to go about answering some of those questions.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
