The Greatest Commandment (3): Love God … You Will Have No Other Gods

There can be only one.

Wandering eyes.

It doesn’t take much anymore and the reality remains to a degree we are all susceptible. It doesn’t have to be about people, it’s all about loyalty in the things that matter. You can be on a good thing and all of a sudden a suggestion or two and … wandering eyes.

God knows all about wandering eyes. He knows all about suggestions that maybe you don’t have to hear what He’s saying. He knows all about suggestions that if you just take what you want, you can be in charge and do what you want and you don’t need Him. He knows all about the depravity, sadness, darkness, shame, division and death that results from those wandering eyes.

His call for an exclusive relationship is a good foundation to develop the love that’s needed to truly experience life. He knows as well as we do that you can’t really have it both ways – you can’t want to please one and the other – especially as they are diametrically opposed. You will end up loving one and hating the other. You don’t need Him to tell you that. You don’t have to watch another drama about the pain and hurt caused by two-timing.

The command to love God is a call to have no other gods. That’s an acknowledgement that others are vying for the throne of the heart. Vying for the heart, the soul and the mind. Vying for devotion and attention. Others may be vying for it, but in and of themselves have nothing of life to offer once they get it. They only lead to that depravity, sadness, darkness, shame …

The command to love God is an invitation to love life. The command to love life as a wholehearted expression requires a wholehearted commitment to God and no one else. For when it comes to life and love the truth remains …

There can be only one.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
