A Short Thing on Hymns

I am grateful for my upbringing that brought me into contact with hymns.

It’s interesting, I think hymns can be both overrated and under-utilised. Growing up there was such a reliance on hymns that it was as though the only songs worth singing had to be written before most of the singers were born. That’s a disappointing perspective to hold, because it’s as if new songs can’t carry weight and have significance. It also overlooks the small fact that at the time the hymns were written, people would have likewise scorned those tunes because they weren’t decades old.

For all that, though, there’s a sense in which they’re not utilised as much as they should. These hymns are supposed to be gateways to truths of the ages that stirs the heart to God – sometimes we can overlook them and only appreciate the emotional response without going anywhere deeper with it.

I encourage you to appreciate hymns with a fresh approach. Don’t consider them for their age, consider them for their quality to provoke the entire being to love God, grow to know Him as well as reveal truths of life that He reveals to us.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
