For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord ; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. (2 Kings 3:17-18 NIV)
When you ask God for guidance, be prepared to get guidance from God.
The king of Israel, like his predecessors didn’t really pay that much attention to following Yahweh, but when it suited him, as it did in dealing with the revolt of the Moabites and his Alliance with Judah and Edom faced great lack of water, all of a sudden it was about what the Lord says. It is not surprising behaviour. Often we’re happy to do our own thing our own way until trouble comes, then we get desperate for help.
The heart of this episode is in how Elisha reacts to the crisis. It must have been quite the sight seeing the man of God require a harpist at this particular stage as he sought the Lord for guidance. It’s remarkable that as the harpist plays the word of the Lord comes to the man of God. It’s like music at that time creates the environment for the prophetic word to flow.
Speaking of flowing, the word of the Lord focuses not just on provision in their time of lack, but provision of victory in their time of conflict. The miraculous provision of water and its appearance in the early morning sun was the key to the fulfilment of the word of the Lord. The brilliant way in which God used the water to trick the enemy while providing for His people highlights the creativity and diverse ways in which God can bring about the victory.
That is to say: when you ask God for guidance, be prepared to get guidance from God.
