The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit, and whoever protects their master will be honored. (Proverbs 27:18 NIV)
Among the positive things to say about David the king of Israel is his incredible loyalty to his predecessor King Saul. It’s incredible because to be hounded by your boss because of their jealousy and mental instability and maintain a love and respect for them even to the point of mourning their demise speaks volumes of an attitude to masters.
That desire to protect the boss is not always evident in scripture. Judas wasn’t too slow in betraying his boss. Even David’s sons showed an inability to show a desire to protect their father whether in Absalom’s coup or in Adonijah’s assuming the throne without consent. The result of these efforts was fatal. Whereas the benefits of serving the master is seen in the legacy of David epitomised in the royal seed who showed great care in following His heavenly father even to the point of the cross.
We don’t all have a great boss, but we all have a great opportunity for blessing by protecting our boss and expressing true love and loyalty.
