You shall therefore keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year. (Exodus 13:10)
People make a big deal out of the first day of the year – new year’s resolutions and all that kinda jazz. Which is fair enough.
The real big deal that we make after that is the first day of our lives in the year. That first day being the birthday. So significant is the month in which the people are set free an entire calendar is set apart for it and a whole week is dedicated to it. It is not just a meal, it is a complete way of life dedicated to the memory of how a people were set free.
In as much as America celebrates its Independence Day – there’s something to be said about celebrating the entire deliverance from slavery. Not so much Independence Day as Deliverance Week.
What a way to mark that memory than by dedicating the first – even as God would later dedicate His first for the deliverance of humanity.
