The role of a servant can be trivialised and made to seem of little to no importance.
Yet there is something about the role of serving the needs of others that has a rich reward, sometimes far greater than whatever the experience for the one who has been served.
There are precious times when I am called to serve in an area of delight where it’s all really about giving to the other to help them in an area of great need. To be used by God as someone who can bring that about to great effect is one of the greatest feelings in the world. to be in tune with the call to serve and then engage in it wholeheartedly even without recognition and thanks, there is something truly stimulating and pleasing about it. It feels like you’re in line with what God wants from you.
There are more challenging experiences where the area of service is not a delight. It’s an area in which I am competent but it does nothing to stimulate or make attractive. Yet it is still a call to serve and what again makes that a lot more than bearable is with the mind understanding the purpose, the ultimate audience and the final outcome of anything done for Christ.
It reminds me of the fact that every believer in God is a minister and they do what they do well when they serve. Not flaunt, not show off, not preen – but apply what they’ve been given to serve in the service of their fellow human being for the glory of God.
That kind of lifestyle and thinking makes it a pleasure to serve.
