There is a need to focus on the need for Jesus.
I recognise how easy it is to get distracted. The problem of being distracted is that even if you’re doing noble things, they miss the point. There are a lot of noble things going in the world that miss the point.
That point chiefly being that life only ever makes sense if it’s lived in the light of Jesus Christ.
In as much as I have been following Jesus for just over 20 years, I recognise I am all the more in need of Him. I need Him because I can get distracted. I need Him because relationships, projects, activities, work, rest, anything and almost everything can be a hindrance and often will be when it tugs at my self – a self that should have been dead when the life of Christ came in.
When things don’t work out the way I want to, I want to lash out and blame. In actuality it’s another door closed to allow me to see that I am blinded by the distractions from what remains the only thing that matters. People will get food, but if they don’t hear about the Bread of Life what’s the point? The thirsty will get drink, but if they don’t find the real water of life, why on earth allow someone to drink themselves literally to death?
No it’s not solely about talking, it’s not about handing out tracts and it’s not about brow-beating people with loads of Christian jargon to get them into making a prayer and then joining a club. It is still about being confident in the gospel of Jesus Christ and being focussed in it and by it so that we’re able to deliver it in any given context so that people can be a part of what really matters.
It’s not an either/or situation, it’s a confession that sometimes the balance tilts and needs to be readjusted. There is a time when we need to be aware that sometimes we can get distracted. While we’re distracted opportunities are missed and people miss out.
For His Name’s Sake
