You Are The Treasure That I Seek

I don’t think we have it right when it comes to discipline.

One aspect almost bends over backwards to avoid conflict and upsetting people. It is virtually no discipline at all. It is far too lax. The other approach is virtually a brutal infliction of aggressive force to bring about submissive cooperation.

Of course there are stabs of finding the middle ground. What helps me considerably, is putting discipline in the context of the journey. Behaving in a way that is out of line, puts us off course from the goal we truly seek. Sometimes drastic and firm action has to be taken to get us back in line. Even that, however, is done mindful of the goal ahead. It is lovingly done in the hope that we can remind ourselves of what really matters in life.

What really matters is the treasure we seek. That treasure is not physical jewels and money, for that treasure quickly fades away and will be useless in allowing us to be fulfilled. That treasure is not the acclaim of people because like vapour it is gone as soon as it has been produced, it’s an illusory and shallow reward for the life we live.

No, the treasure that matters is the treasure of eternal value. The treasure we seek is truly far greater in worth than the mind of man could ever truly fathom. The treasure reflects the glory of God on the earth for He is God in the flesh, crucified and risen, glorified and ruling at the right hand side of the Father. The treasure is worth the firm correction. The treasure is worth the rebukes and chastisement. The treasure draws us to do what it takes to be in line and stay there.

When I consider this treasure that I seek, I marvel at His patience and am amazed at His grace as He steadfastly calls us to Himself and uses the wise resources at His disposal to help us to get there.

For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
