Acts Actually: 20 – A Man Driven By The Gospel

And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. (Acts 20:22-24)

It is something to work with someone who is driven.

It’s not that they are always obsessive or anti-social. It is to say that such driven people are clear that all they do is to achieve that which drives them on. They can be a great annoyance, they can also be a tremendous inspiration.

Paul’s desire to share with the brethren as he makes his way back to Jerusalem highlights a man who is completely sold out for the gospel. It’s also clear that this living for the sake of the gospel saw a man pour his heart out for the sake of the believers as well. Their affection is evident in being receptive to him as he talks through the night. There’s also the response of sadness to the news that they may not see his face again. Here is a man who lived the gospel that allowed others to bear witness to it and experience the true light in the context of relationship.

By the time, then, that he encourages the elders of the church to oversee the flock, he can give this charge as someone who exemplifies care for the flock. This charge is not to be mistaken for a call to be like a CEO over a business. It is the call to be sacrificial examples to the flock and endeavour to do everything in their power to know Jesus and live the truth.

These examples are best set by those who live for nothing other than the gospel. These examples are best set by those for whom teaching and demonstrating the Kingdom is of paramount importance in life.

Are you driven by these things?

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
